4 TIPS FOR OFFSHORE FISHING

One favorite activity among locals and visitors to Los Cabos is offshore or deep sea fishing. Whether you’re participating in a tournament or just enjoying a deep sea fishing charter while on vacation, its sure to be an experience you’ll remember forever. With the upcoming Bisbee’s Tournaments, we wanted to dedicate today’s blog to offshore fishing tips. If you’ve never been deep sea fishing before, these tips should come in handy. In addition to our tips, you’ll also have the knowledge and expertise of the company handling your charter. When you stay with Lifestyle Villas, we’ll help you add the perfect Los Cabos deep sea fishing trip to your itinerary.

1. BRING THE RIGHT GEAR.
Offshore or deep sea fishing is quite different from fishing in lakes, rivers and streams. Due to the variety of deep-sea game fish, there are many different techniques used. Depending on the type of fish you’re wanting to catch and the technique that you are using, you’ll need different fishing tackle and fishing gear. Offshore fishing could involve trolling with artificial fishing lures or live baits, jigging with lures or bottom fishing with baits. 2. LOOK IN THE RIGHT SPOTS.
Some of the best ways to locate fishing areas are with a fishfinder, a GPS or a nautical map. Rocks, reefs, and wrecks are great places to look for fish. These structures provide shelter for fish, a place for them to hide from other sea life. Manmade structures like towers and navigational aids are not only valuable for anglers trying to find their way, but they also offer another place for fish to seek refuge. Submerged mountain ranges and hills divert the current and create ideal spots for offshore fishing. In addition, seamounts provide fish more favorable water conditions. When deep sea fishing around hills and seamounts, look for variations in the surface conditions such as ripples, rips or tide lines that may indicate changes in the water temperature, salinity, clarity or current. Deep canyons, gorges, and cliffs that line the Continental Shelf are also great places to find fish. While fishing in the open ocean is possible, it’s not recommended for inexperienced deep sea anglers.

3. KNOW HOW TO BAIT PROPERLY.
There are a variety of different types of bait you can use, but whichever you choose, you want to make sure to handle it properly. If you’re using squid as your bait, you can easily bait your hook early. However, if you are using live fish as bait, you’ll want to wait until you’re completely ready to fish. You want a lively fish at the end of your hook to better attract the target fish. If you bait your hook to early and let it dangle on the line, the bait is dying and won’t be as attractive as live, wiggling bait. If you’re using squid, you won’t need to change your bait until it’s gone, but if you’re using live fish, make sure its wiggling at the end of your line. If you can’t feel it wiggling, you’ll want to reel it in and pin on a new bait.

4. BE PATIENT AND HAVE FUN.
If you’ve never gone offshore fishing before, its important to maintain the right attitude. Offshore fishing can be more difficult than freshwater fishing. Not every deep sea fishing trip results in the catch of a lifetime like you might see on TV. Even experienced anglers can come back with nothing. The important part is to enjoy your time out on the water. If you’ve never done it before, it's a great experience that everyone should experience at least once – and there’s no better place to do it than beautiful Los Cabos.
